Substance Abuse

It has been said that we do drunk or high what we want to do sober. Substance use is a type of domestic abuse in the sense that it can be a tool of voluntary disinhibition. Certainly the disinhibition contributes to the fact that abusive acts are much more frequent and severe where substance use is present. In fact the temperance movement of the last century was driven by the desire to stop violence and abuse against women and children.

A discussion of addiction is beyond the scope of this website. However, a basic component of addictive thinking is the attempt to control, and control is fundamental to abuse. It is not possible to meaningfully address abuse until addictions are in remission.
